Friday’s local golf roundup: Williamsburg’s Cain falls in VSGA Super Senior Amateur 75-and-over final

Jack Vardaman, 75, of Washington beat Williamsburg’s Harry Cain, 77, by 3-and-1 score to win the VSGA Super Senior Amateur Championship 75-and-over championship at the Homestead in Hot Springs.

Cain was playing in his sixth final in seven years. He is a four-time champion, including last year.

Eastern Amateur

James Clark of Columbus, Ga., fired a 6-under-par 64 for a 132 and a two-stroke lead halfway through the Eastern Amateur tournament at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club in Portsmouth.

First-round leader Colton Yates, from Arizona State, was two strokes behind at 134 after a 70. Jacob Solomon of Dublin, Calif., and J.B. Williams of Danville, Ky., shared third place at 135.

Nick Tremps of Williamsburg was at 141, while Hampton golfer Mike Askew’s 75 put him at 142. Players at 146 or better made the cut.
