Thursday's high school highlights: Phoebus boys, Poquoson and Warhill girls reach conference basketball finals; some BRD wrestlers advance at state

Antwan Miles scored 17 points Thursday night to lead Phoebus to a 69-36 victory against Tabb in a Conference 27 semifinal.

The Phantoms will play at Norcom at 7 p.m. Friday in the C-27 final, then join the Greyhounds in the Group 3A East regional. Norcom beat Booker T. Washington Thursday.

C-25: Colonial Heights overcame a 20-point deficit to win 54-51 at New Kent and advance to the Colonial Rivers Conference 25 title game, earning a 3A East regional berth in the process.

The Colonials will meet the Warhill-Southampton winner Friday in the conference final.

C-41: In the Conference 41 semifinals Wednesday, Surry County fell 73-68 at top-seeded Northampton, while No. 2 Franklin hammered No. 3 Sussex Central 78-44.

Regular season: Cle’von Greene scored a game-high 39 points as Williamsburg Christian Academy clinched the Metro Conference regular-season title with a 92-81 victory against Hampton Christian Academy. 


C-18: Heritage stifled host Grafton 43-20 Thursday for the Ironclad Conference 18 tournament title. Both next will compete in the 4A East tournament.

C-25: Sondra Fan scored 25 points to lead Poquoson to a 50-48 home victory against Park View in a Conference 25 semifinal.

The Islanders clinched a 3A East regional berth alongside top-seeded Warhill, which dominated Colonial Heights 50-22. The Lions will play host to Bay Rivers District rival Poquoson at 7 p.m. Friday in the conference final.

Park View had advanced Tuesday by edging New Kent 40-37 in South Hill.


Jamestown's boys placed second in the Group 4A East regional at Boo Williams Sportsplex.


Group 3A: Poquoson's Brett Poultney (113 pounds), Colten Hicks (170) and Bryce Buchanan (220), York's Hanyu Qui (138), Warhill's Malik Barr (152) and Tabb's Jake Roberts (220) were among the wrestlers who won Thursday night in the preliminary rounds of state competition at Salem Civic Center.

They joined the top four seeds in each bracket, who received byes to the quarterfinals.

Among the competitors who lost and will compete again Friday in wrestlebacks: New Kent's Eric Taylor (120), Shane Weimer (126), Poquoson's Hunter Darouse (138) and Dalton Jones (285), York's Tommy Ciccone (145) and John Cassidy (160), Warhill's Jack Wright (160) and Bryant Walker (170), and Phoebus' DeQuandre Edwards (182).

Group 4A: Smithfield competitors went 3-4 in the first round of the state tournament at Salem Civic Center.

Mason Parker (113), Brett Deese (132) and Tyler Sharon (152) advanced to the quarterfinals. Carson King (120), Garrett Blatt (138), Dawson Stevens (170) and Jacob Walker (160), who reached overtime but was pinned, lost and will try to advance Friday in the back draw.

Lafayette's Kane Hurt (145) and Noah Caballero (285) lost in the first round, but Grafton's Braxton Fell (152) won by a major decision to reach the quarterfinals.

Group 5A: Peninsula District wrestlers Dillon Messick of Warwick (106 pounds), Brooklyn Graham of Bethel (132) and Jake Williams of Bethel (138) all lost their first-round state tournament matches at Oscar Smith.

They will return Friday to compete in the wrestleback rounds.
