Smithfield rips Bruton, clinches 4A South playoff berth

Daily Press

Smithfield High needed a victory Friday to ensure a berth in the playoffs, and the Packers got it with little problem via a 42-0 victory at Bruton.

Donald King ran for three touchdowns and Christopher Pierce caught three scoring passes from Nick Turner for the Packers (5-5, 4-5 Bay Rivers District). They will play a road game in the Group 4A South regional bracket.

King, who ran for 131 yards on 21 carries, scored on runs of 2, 9 and 28 yards.

Pierce finished with seven catches for 136 yards and Turner finished with 218 passing yards.

Bruton (2-8, 2-7) is projected to make the 2A East playoffs despite a record well below .500. The Panthers gain lots of extra rating points by playing the contingent of 4A and 3A teams throughout the Bay Rivers.
