JAMES CITY — With three fourth-quarter touchdowns, Smithfield pulled away to a 42-7 victory over Warhill on Friday at Cooley Field. The triumph kept the Packers in a three-way tie for first place in the Bay Rivers District with York and Lafayette.
Smithfield got on the board early as quarterback Jermaal Wells dashed a quick 4 yards into the end zone. Jacob Anderson made the extra point with 5:59 to play in the opening quarter.
The Packers (7-1, 6-1 district) extended their lead with a 7-yard run by Marquis Childress just two minutes into the second quarter. But the Lions (4-4) answered with their lone touchdown as Devonte Dedmon scored on a 47-yard run. Evan McCoy kicked the extra point to cut Smithfield's lead to one touchdown before the half.
A pair of long passes sparked the Packers to a bigger lead in the second half. In the third, Bruce Cypress hauled in a 62-yard pass from Wells and Anderson added the extra point.
Wells then completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Curry with 10:02 remaining in the contest. Less than three minutes later, Kyon Croker ran 17 yards for another Packer touchdown and a 35-7 advantage.
A running clock took effect after Tyrone Gardner rushed 9 yards for the final Smithfield touchdown.
