Jamestown, York girls win VHSL swimming championships as state records fall

jheeter@dailypress.com

The Jamestown girls claimed their fifth consecutive Virginia High School League swimming championship, while their Bay Rivers District rivals York won a state championship a year after finishing second.

The wins — Jamestown in Class 4 and York in Class 3 at SwimRVA in Richmond — headlined strong performances from several Peninsula athletes and included record-breaking marks.

The Eagles figured to face a stiff challenge in defense of their championship, and they got just that, with six schools coming within 27 points of their final score of 226. King George finished five points behind in second, while Blacksburg scored 220.50. Riverside of Northern Virginia, last year’s Class 3 champion, finished fifth with 205 points. Lafayette’s girls finished seventh. The five-point margin of victory was the slimmest in any classification, boys or girls.

Jamestown’s Abby Larson broke her own Class 4 state records to win the 50-yard freestyle (23.20) and the 100 freestyle (50.47).

The Eagles’ 400 freestyle relay finished second as the competition came down to the final event. The Eagles earned 34 points to lock up the win. King George finished sixth and gained 26 points. The championship came as the Eagles racked up points with a deep team that often had multiple scorers in one event. The Eagles are also a young team, with Larson and Carter Roehrle — they’ve signed with Virginia Tech and James Madison, respectively — as the only two seniors on the two who scored points.

Lafayette’s girls won the 200 freestyle relay, and Colby Hurt (200 individual medley) and Grace Olsen (100 breaststroke) broke state records in individual wins. The Rams finished seventh. Olsen also finished second in the 100 butterfly, while Hurt was also third in the 500 freestyle. Sofia Long placed third in the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle.

York’s championship didn’t come down to the end. The Falcons outpaced second-place Western Albemarle by 57 points. Third-place Cave Spring of Roanoke scored 176 points, half of York’s 352.

The Falcons won the 200 medley relay (state record) and 200 freestyle relay. Alex Slayton, a Virginia Tech signee, won the 50 and 100 freestyle — she broke the state record in the 50. York’s Danika Katzer, who signed with Tennessee, won the 100 breaststroke and finished second in the 200 individual medley. Laura Gaffney (200 and 500 free), Bella Kimbel (200 IM), Megan Gaffney (100 breaststroke) and Alyssa Reilly (100 backstroke) all earned top-three finishes.

Tabb finished third in the 200 medley relay behind the Falcons, while Tristan Harrison finished second in the 100 butterfly and Megan Turner was second in the 100 breaststroke. The Tigers finished seventh overall. New Kent’s Alexa Mills placed second in the 1-meter diving event.

While the Eagles and Falcons walked away with state championships, several other Peninsula athletes had impressive showings.

Poquoson junior Morgan Miller, who is also set to swim at Virginia Tech, broke the Class 2 state record in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Her freestyle split in the IM was the fastest of any competitor and would have been fast enough to win the 50 freestyle.

The Bruton girls finished sixth overall — Maggie Walker of Richmond won — in Class 2, with Gina Lynch breaking the state record to win the 200 freestyle. The Panthers gained top-three finishes in the 100 backstroke (Isabelle Hanson and Lynch) and the 400 free relay.

In Class 5, Kecoughtan’s Brieanna Romney finished second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle. The Menchville girls finished third in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Menchville boys landed top-three finishes in the 200 medley relay (second) and the 100 backstroke (Kade Younger, third). The Menchville boys finished fifth overall, while the girls were seventh.

The Tabb boys finished fifth in Class 3, getting wins from Nick Talati (200 freestyle) and CJ Omweg (100 backstroke). Talati finished second in the 100 butterfly, while Noah Fields finished second behind Omweg in the 100 backstroke.

Bruton’s Evan Lynch, who is headed to Towson, broke the state record in the 200 freestyle and also won the 500 freestyle. Teammate John Morrow finished second in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Chris Homer was second behind Lynch in the 500 freestyle, while Bruton’s Jacob Sprigg finished second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke. The Panthers finished third in Class 2, 144 points behind winner George Mason.

Jefferson Forest won the Class 4 boys title, with Lafayette placing fourth. The Rams’ Flynn Crisci finished second in the 100 breaststroke, while Chris Kostelni and Sam Long finished third in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM, respectively. The Rams’ 200 medley relay also placed third.
