Wednesday’s regional sports roundup: Richmond, VMI alter football plans because of Florence; CNU game won’t be made up

Football:

Two games involving state FCS teams were moved up as Hurricane Florence headed toward the East Coast.

Richmond, instead of playing at home Saturday, will play at 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis in Loretto, Pa. VMI will stay home for its game but moved it up a day to 2:30 p.m. Friday against East Tennessee State. …

Christopher Newport, whose campus is closed because of the forecast, saw its game at Frostburg State officially canceled because the teams’ bye weeks are different. Both teams will play nine games instead of 10. …

Jordan Hall (2-1) rushed for 134 yards and Tre Frederick for 127 to help Randolph-Macon defeat Catholic 41-6 in Ashland. The Cardinals fell to 0-3.

Men’s basketball:

The Big South announced a schedule that will feature each team playing 16 conference games.

Hampton’s Big South debut will be home in the Convocation Center Jan. 10 against Charleston Southern. The Pirates will play host to defending regular-season champion UNC Asheville two days later.

Women’s basketball:

The Big South’s schedule showed that Hampton will play its first conference contest Jan. 5 at Charleston Southern. HU’s home Big South debut will be Jan. 10 against Radford.

Women’s soccer:

Goals by Julianne Knoblett and Blake Cashin in the first 10 minutes of the game lifted VMI (6-0-1) to a 2-0 victory at Richmond, continuing the best start in Keydets history. The Spiders fell to 0-7.

Women’s volleyball:

The VCU Invitational, with Virginia, South Carolina, Toledo and the Rams, was canceled because of the forecast.
