Williamsburg’s McClendon takes Modified points championship at Virginia Motor Speedway

Hunter McClendon of Williamsburg struggled on Virginia Motor Speedway’s final Saturday night of weekly racing, but he still managed to win the season’s Modified points championship at the dirt track on the Middle Peninsula.

McClendon had to park his car on the third lap with a broken part, but he held off Chase Butler by two points.

Joey Polevoy won the race over second-place Butler.

Davis Lipscombe won the Pro Late Model feature. He took the lead on lap 12 and was followed by second-place Corey Almond and third-place Dustin Ferguson.

Fourth-place Matt Quade won the season points championship.

In the Sportsman 30-lapper, Tyler Shipp took the lead on the opening lap and scored his second victory of the season. Mark Gonzales was second and Matt Meads third, but fourth-place Tim Shelton took the points title.

In the Limited Stock Car division, James Givens held off Trent Clemans for his sixth victory of the season. Givens easily took the points championship.

VMS will return to action with the Fastrak World Championship weekend Sept. 14-15.
