William and Mary women’s basketball coach Debbie Taylor was fired Tuesday after 14 seasons, the school announced.

The Tribe just concluded an 8-22 record, its sixth consecutive losing season, capped by a 65-31 loss to Drexel in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

Taylor’s teams on the court rarely approached their success off the court and in the classroom. She has a career record of 146-265, and her teams were 73-175 in CAA play.

W&M posted only two winning seasons during Taylor’s tenure and never finished higher than fifth in the CAA. The Tribe won only six tournament games, its last coming in 2009.

Tribe athletic director Terry Driscoll could not be reached for comment, but released a statement that read: “I want to thank Debbie Taylor for all her contributions to the program for the past 14 seasons. She was always a first-class representative of her program and the College of William and Mary. I sincerely wish her well as she explores other career opportunities.”

William and Mary basketball is one of the more difficult jobs in Division I, because of its lack of tradition and high admissions and academic standards, competing in a league with schools that can recruit from a broader talent base.

The difficulties were highlighted the past two seasons. Taylor had a couple of her most talented and experienced teams, but managed just 10 wins overall and a 3-15 conference record in 2011-12, and eight wins and a 6-12 CAA record this season.
