WILLIAMSBURG — Just when you thought what happened to William and Mary last weekend couldn’t get any worse …
Three days after the Tribe’s most unexpected loss in years, a 27-10 home setback to Elon, came the news that leading rusher Albert Funderburke is expected to be lost for the season with a torn ACL.
That’s not certain yet, but W&M coach Jimmye Laycock sounded pretty convinced Wednesday.
“It looks to be an ACL, and he looks to be out for the year,” Laycock said. “I can’t say that for sure until they do the MRI, and I think they’re getting that scheduled for today or tomorrow. But he’s probably out, and that’s a big one.”
To say the least. With Kendell Anderson battling injuries, first a shoulder injury and then a sprained ankle, Funderburke is W&M’s top rusher with 294 yards and four touchdowns. He ran for a career-high 137 yards and three scores in Week 3 against Norfolk State.
Funderburke, a redshirt freshman, gained 57 yards on 12 carries Saturday. But with about three minutes left in the first half, he injured his knee at the end of a 9-yard run. He hobbled off the field and was helped to the locker room.
Anderson carried nine times for a season-high 46 yards.
“I don’t know if he was 100 percent the other night, but he was pretty close,” Laycock said of Anderson. “Hopefully, he’ll keep getting better and better as we go. He didn’t get any setback, that’s what I was concerned about Saturday night.”
Funderburke’s potential season-ending injury makes William and Mary’s situation even more tenuous entering Saturday’s game at New Hampshire. The loss to Elon, which hasn’t had a winning season since 2010, dealt the Tribe’s playoff hopes an early blow.
W&M’s defense held the Phoenix to 236 total yards, but the offense and especially the punt team made winning problematic. Quarterback Steve Cluley threw three interceptions, bringing his total to 15 in his last seven games dating back to last season.
After a three-and-out on W&M’s first drive, Hunter Windmuller’s punt was blocked and recovered at the Tribe 22. That led to a field goal to make it 3-0.
Then, in the second quarter, Windmuller dropped a good snap and was tackled at the 6-yard line. That set up a short scoring drive that put the Phoenix ahead 17-0, and the Tribe didn’t have nearly enough to recover.
“It was brutal,” tight end Andrew Caskin said. “After the game, we were sitting in the locker room, we didn’t even want to leave. We got our butts kicked. It was humbling.
“We were allowed to be cranky for two days, but now we have to move on. UNH is obviously a great team. We don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves and dwell on the past.”
Interestingly, W&M was in a similar situation a year ago. Also in its fourth game, the Tribe was upset at Delaware, which finished 4-7. W&M rebounded with six consecutive wins, three over nationally ranked teams, and made the playoffs.
“We did, but that was last year’s team and last year’s players,” Laycock said. “This is this year’s team and this year’s players, so we’ll see how they are.”
Caskin said the first step is on the practice field.
“We just need to go out and prepare harder,” he said. “We obviously did a lot of things wrong last weekend, but that just didn’t happen on Saturday. That happened the week before, it happened in practiced, it happened in meetings, and it happened watching film.
“That’s our biggest point of emphasis. We just can’t just wait until Saturday and just turn it on. It needs to be a consistent effort throughout the week.”
NOTES: Defensive end Peyton Gryder, who missed last week’s game with a back injury, is out for New Hampshire, Laycock said. Redshirt freshman Joe Suarez will start for the second straight week. … William and Mary fell from seventh to 17th in the FBS coaches poll. … Not that anyone needs reminding, but in its last trip to Durham, N.H., W&M lost 32-3. That was in 2014. … The Wildcats come in 2-2, 1-0 in the CAA, following last week’s 39-17 win at Rhode Island. UNH has been to the playoffs the last 12 years, the longest streak in the nation.
