2007 Football Preview -- Football is King
Hear, ye!
Hear, ye!
The people have spoken -- football is king!
Despite all the issues facing the sport today (see: Michael Vick), the game and its essence remain atop the pantheon of American sport.
We chose to celebrate football's reign this year by featuring some of the game's kings and portraying some of our other subjects photographed in a royal theme.
Of course, we threw in some surprises.
Among those emperors who chose to pose for our cameras and offer their takes on the on the current state of the sport -- Don Shula, the all-time winningest NFL coach; Bobby Bowden, the all-time winningest Div. I-A college coach; Regis Philbin, a passionate Notre Dame fan who is the current king of TV with more than 15,700 hours on-camera in his career, and the always bombastic Don King, whose name itself combined with his career as a boxing promoter leaves little doubt about where he ranks.
For our first cover, we ended any and doubt about football's dominance by having King, boxing'self-proclaimed monarch, wave the flag for football. King has been a public mainstay in the world of sports for the past 40 years. He grew up in the ghettos of Cleveland and became one of the most influential figures in sports.
Our first cover King was photographed for this section by Sentinel staffer Joe Burbank in Kissimmee exclusively for this section in February.
"Only in America can a Don King happen," King told us just last week.
We agree.
And only in America -- football is king.
Enjoy!
