Eagles thump Poquoson for first win
JAMES CITY -- Home-field advantage is important for any team, but that adage especially holds true for Jamestown High's volleyball team.
Since 2000 the Eagles have lost fewer than a dozen matches in their own gymnasium, making it a tough place to play for any team that steps on the floor at Jamestown.
That streak continued Tuesday as the Eagles crushed visiting Poquoson 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 for their first Bay Rivers District victory of the season.
Setter LeeAnne Shocklin led the charge for Jamestown (1-1), netting 14 service points, including five aces, and 25 assists.
The junior setter did a great job of spreading the wealth with her hitters, getting everyone involved.
Junior Cory Harris tallied 14 service points, five kills and three aces. Sophomore middle hitter Krista Hughes added nine points, four kills and two blocks.
Senior outside hitter Kaely McDougal was also a force at the net, tallying six points and a team-high nine kills. Senior middle hitter Virginia Hewitt chipped in eight kills in the victory.
Jamestown cruised through the first two games, barely working up a sweat against a young Poquoson team.
The Islanders tried to make a match of it in Game 3, taking a 5-3 lead. But McDougal went on a five-point run and freshman Kieley Sutton added four points to put the game out of reach.
Amy Brogden led Poquoson with four points and Kayla Snapp had four kills.
The Eagles return to action Thursday when they travel to Smithfield to take on the Packers. Game time is 7 p.m.
