Rams girls soccer stays unbeaten

JAMES CITY - Addie Williams and Hannah Lyerly are used to winning Bay Rivers District championships.

In three seasons with Lafayette High’s girls soccer program, the seniors have won three straight district regular season and tournament championships.

Williams and Lyerly took another step toward a fourth district crown Wednesday night with a 2-1 win over Tabb at James City County Stadium.

Williams stopped two of the three sthots she faced in goal and Lyerly anchored a defensive unit that shut down a very explosive Tigers’ squad to earn sole possession of first place in the standings.

In a showdown of district unbeatens, Tabb and Lafayette put on a soccer showcase fitting of the Bay Rivers’ top squads.

The Rams dominated play in the midfield for most of the first half, as Allyn Potts, Jacinda Flemming and Katherine Higgins controlled the action.

After 10 minutes of back-and-forth action, Potts recorded the game’s first scoring chance. Hannah Lee found the sophomore midfielder inside the goal box, but her shot bounced just wide of the goal.

Lafayette (7-0-1 overall, 4-0 district) continued to mount scoring runs and were finally rewarded as Higgins scored off a nice pass from Flemming to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.

Tabb seemed unfazed by the early marker and took the attack at Lafayette.

Two players collided battling for a loose ball and Tabb was awarded a free kick from 12 yards out.

Amara Betoney took advantage of the opportunity, spliting Lafayette’s three-person wall and tucking a shot past a diving Williams inside the left post to tie the game at 1-1 with 15 minutes left.

Lafayette regained the lead with 10 minutes left in the half off a scramble in front. Potts picked up the loose ball inside the box and blasted a shot in the upper left-hand corner of the net for a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Rams continued to dictate the play in the second half, as the defense clamped down the Tabb offense.

Melanie Marotta, Sara Abrahams, Mary-Catherine Hoyt and Lyerly didn’t allow a shot in the final 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, Lafayette continued to pepper the ball at the net. Higgins had four shots on goal and Hannah Lee contributed two more, but Tabb goalkeeper Anne Wallace turned aside every chance to keep her team in the game.

Lafayette finished the game with 12 shots on goal. Wallace finished the game with five saves for the Tigers.

Warhill girls — The Lions scored two goals in the final 40 minutes Tuesday night to lead Warhill to a 3-2 victory over York High at James City County Stadium.

Ashley Williams netted all three goals for Warhill including two in the second half to give the Lions’ their first win in school history.

Warhill (2-7-1, 2-4) extended its winning streak to two in a row Thursday night with a 1-0 win over Smithfield .

Williams scored a second-half marker and Samantha Hobe stopped all 15 shots she faced to preserve the win.

Walsingham —Meredith Tobias scored a first half goal and Regan Murphy made the lead standup as Walsingham Academy (7-1-1) edged Bishop Sullivan Catholic 1-0 on Thursday.

Murphy stopped all seven shots she faced to notch the shutout for the Trojans.
