JAMES CITY —Kevin Darcy expected Jamestown High’s girls soccer team to compete for a second-straight Region I playoff appearance this spring.

With five games left on the schedule, the Eagles are right where they need to be following Wednesday’s 5-1 victory over Bruton at James City County Stadium.

Lauren Gough scored a natural hat trick in the first half as Jamestown (6-3 overall, 3-2 district) scored five unanswered goals to pull into a tie with the Panthers for fourth-place in the district standings.

The Eagles are also within striking distance of three-time reigning district champion Lafayette (7-0-1), heading into next Tuesday’s showdown with the Rams in Williamsburg.

Bruton (6-2, 3-2) seized control early, thanks to some nifty work from Luciana Lugaspi and Jenny Rolley.

Lugaspi and Rolley were both key contributors on the Panthers basketball team that reached the Group AA state semifinals, and the chemistry paid off for the first goal.

Lugaspi intercepted a pass near midfield and quickly fed the ball up to Rolley near midfield. Rolley delivered a quick through ball to Lugaspi for a breakaway attempt and the junior chipped the ball over Jamestown keeper Jessica Thompson for a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game.

The Panthers, celebration would be a short one, as Gough dominated the game for the final 70 minutes.

The sophomore forward scored three minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Gough made a nice move around the Panthers’ defender and blasted a shot inside the left post.

Gough struck again two minutes later, capitilizing on a corner kick. Elizabeth Palmer flicks a pass to Gough stationed in front of the goal and the sophomore volleys a shot past Bruton keeper Rebecca Ellis to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Jamestown extended the lead to 3-1 with 11 minutes left in the half on Gough’s third goal. Jessica Napoleon’s throw-in from the right sideline caught Gough in stride and the sophomore rocketed a shot inside the left post.

The scoring parade continued thanks to the playmaking of Palmer and Gough. Palmer sprinted in from the right wing and threaded a pass to Gough in stride for her fourth goal of the game and a 4-1 lead with 26:24 remaining.

Jessica Napoleon capped the scoring 10 minutes later on a failed clearing attempt by the Bruton defense. Napoleon gained possession inside the box and fired a shot on goal that squirted through the legs of Ellis for a 5-0 edge.

The Eagles also received a great effort defensively. Anna Jacobs, Ali Jacobs and Palmer held the Panthers without a shot for the final 52 minutes to secure the win.

Ellis finished the game with seven saves to lead Bruton. Thompson recorded three saves for the Eagles.

Boys soccer —Kramer Runager notched his third hat trick of the season to lead Jamestown High’s boys soccer team to a convincing 9-1 road win at Bruton (1-5-2, 0-4-1).

David Rozmiarek scored two goals and Danny Franklin and John Tarley each tallied a goal and two assists as six different players tallied goals for Jamestown (8-2, 6-0).

Dylan Franklin and Patrick O’Brien also scored goals for Jamestown. J.T. Smith tallied two assists and Scott Cutler added another helper for the Eagles.
