Battling for the top spot in girls tennis

JAMES CITY —The road to the Bay Rivers District girls tennis championship goes through Williamsburg.
Jamestown and Lafayette entered Friday’s showdown with identical 6-1 records, including perfect 6-0 marks against district competition.
The Eagles beat Warhill and Southampton 9-0 this week to extend their winning streak to six in a row. Kelly Little and Whitney Simerlein won singles and doubles matches as Jamestown (6-1, 6-0) lost just three games to the Lions.
Little beat Kristina Wolin 6-0, 6-0 at No.1 singles, while Simerlein blanked Rachel Morgan at No.2 singles.
Natalie Donvito beat Jessica Lavold at No.3 singles, while Winston Fleischman cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Morgan Dronen.
Christie Geiling beat Shelby Mertens 6-1, 6-0, while Morrow Heard dispatched Kelly Lebrija 6-0, 6-0 at No.6 singles.
Jamestown defeated Warhill 9-0 on Thursday and Southampton 9-0 on Friday to improve to 6-0 in the Bay Rivers District and 6-1 overall
In doubles action, Little and Simerlein defeated Wolin and Morgan 8-0. Ariel Herman-Geilling beat Lavold-Dronen 8-1 at No.2 doubles, while Joe Foster-Emily Goldhammer beat Mertens-Lebrija 8-1 for their first varsity win at No.3 doubles.
On Wednesday, Little, Simmerlin, Donvito, Fleishman, Herman and Anna Nooe won singles matches as Jamestown beat Southampton 9-0.
Little-Simerlein, Donvito-Fleischman and Heard-Alyssa Mellman captured doubles victories.
Lafayette kept pace with a convincing 7-2 win over New Kent on Wednesday.

Tori Ford won 6-0, 6-0 at No.1 singles and Annie Goode lost just two games in a victory at No. 2 singles. Madeline Jones turned in the match of the day, posting a 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 1-0 (10-2) win at No.3 singles.
Lizzie Mitchell prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at No.4 singles and Robin Bland eeked out a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles.
Ford and Goode cruised to an 8-1 victory at No.1 doubles. Jones and Mitchell posted an 8-4 win at No.2 doubles.
Bruton — Grafton won four singles matches and chipped in a pair of doubles victories during the Clippers 6-3 win over Bruton on Thursday.
Helen Mittman defeated Haley Lee 6-1, 6-3 at No.1 singles and Emily Demeo defeated Mary Baucom 6-2, 6-2 at No.2 singles to lead Bruton.
Mittman and Demeo then beat Lee-Baucom 8-3 at No.1 doubles to lead the Panthers.
