JAMES CITY — Jenny Caroll has made the most of her first season as Lafayette High’s ace pitcher.

She’s struck out nearly 100 batters and tossed three shutouts while challenging York’s Ashley Prosper, New Kent’s Becca Mills, Smithfield’s Alora Lincoln and Poquoson’s Star Gibbs as the top power pitchers in the Bay Rivers District.

Carroll’s list of accomplishments grew taller Thursday during a 4-0 victory over Jamestown at the James City-Williams­burg Community Center, coming within two outs of her first no-hitter.

The junior southpaw held the Eagles without a hit for 6 1/3 innings before Kristin Bunn, the daughter of Lafayette coach Tom Bunn, lined a long single to the gap in left-center to break up the no-hit bid.

Carrolll finished with 13 strikeouts, just two shy of her career-high of 15 set earlier this year against the Eagles.

Sammie Cagle had three hits and drove in a run to lead the offensive attack for Lafayette (7-5). Kelly Morris aded two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Carroll scored a pair and drove in another in the victory.

Katie Ferrell struck out six batters in the loss for Jamestown.

On Wednesday the Rams dropped a 5-0 decision on the road against New Kent.

Laura Bauer had three hits with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Trojans. Nikki Jones drove in two runs and Chelsea Bedwell scored another for New Kent.

Becca Mills (9-3) struck out five en route to a 2-hit shutout.

Bruton —Shannon McKinley had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to lead the Panthers to a 9-2 victory over Warhill on Thursday.

Jen Falin scored twice and drove in a pair of runs for Bruton (9-3), which has won seven of its last eight.

Amanda Borden (0-12) took the loss for Warhill.

On Wednesday, Taylor Walker had three hits, including a pair of home runs, and drove in five to lead Pouoqoson to a 15-0 win over Warhill in six innings.

Catherine Clavin added two hits and Star Gibbs (9-3) struck out eight in the circle for the Islanders.
