Eagles girls complete perfect weekend for Williamsburg Christian

JAMES CITY -- The fourth annual Rotary Invitational basketball jamboree wrapped up Saturday at Williamsburg Christian Academy.

Saturday's slate included six girls games with WCA, Jamestown, Lafayette, and Warhill each in action.
WCA finished as Division II runner-up in the private school ranks last season. The Eagles expect to be strong again this season despite losing three productive seniors in addition to Stephanie Seaman, who transferred to Walsingham Academy.

WCA defeated Jamestown 45-15 on Saturday before knocking off Lafayette 35-28. The WCA boys also won twice on Friday.

"I think definitely found out that we have a lot of things that we have to work on, mainly the small things," said WCA coach Donovan Bridgeforth.

Bridgeforth has three junior starters back in addition to eighth-grader Ted'zahua Jones, who is expected to be a standout.

The marquee matchup of the day was WCA against Lafayette. The Eagles mostly controlled the contest, staving off a late Rams' push.

"We're happy about our team today," said Lafayette coach Chris Brown. "They competed. We're starting to feel some chemistry."

Lafayette started the day with a 35-31 win over Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Harper Birdsong, a George Washington recruit.

"We contained her," said Brown. "Not going to shut her down because she's crafty. But we contained her and couple of our players got hot."

Brown liked what he saw in particular from Lafayette players Rachel Lia and Kenya Holliday.

The Rams had already scrimmaged against Bethel earlier in preseason while WCA was playing competitively for the first time.

Each jamboree team played two games consisting of three eight-minute periods in the Rotary Club of the Historic Triangle fundraiser that benefited Polio Plus among other Rotary charities.

The Virginia High School League regular season begins on Monday.
