JAMES CITY - Lafayette scored on its first six possessions en route to a 43-19 victory against Poquoson at Wanner Stadium on Thursday.
Brendan McGinty rushed for three touchdowns and Jahlil Green added one in the air and one on the ground as Lafayette (9-1 overall, 8-1 district) secured a share of the Bay Rivers District title for the first time since 2007.
McGinty only rushed for 22 yards, but had a 4-yard touchdown run and added two quarterback sneaks from the 1-yard line. The sophomore also was efficient in the air, completing 7 of 10 passes for 115 yards in the win.
Green made his final pitch for Bay Rivers District Player of the Year, rushing eight times for 98 yards and a touchdown. The junior completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Darren Patton.
Grayson Boyce carried 16 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns for Poquoson (4-6, 3-6). Austin Turner also scored for the Islanders.
Both teams will advance to the Group AA Region I Division 3 playoffs. Lafayette will receive a first-round bye as one of the top two seeds. Poquoson likely will travel to play the No. 3 seed in next week’s first round.
