Lafayette, Bruton golfers compete in regional events

Lafayette’s Jacob Smethurst shot 83 and Tawni Hatcher 86 at Monday’s 3A East Region golf tournament at par-72 The Golf Club at Brickshire in Providence Forge. They qualified for regionals at the Conference 25 tournament on Sept. 29.

Smethurst’s score Monday was not low enough to advance to state. Hatcher didn’t qualify through the regional tournament either, but will play in an Oct. 20 girls zone qualifier to try to advance to the girls state tournament Oct. 27 in Alexandria, according to Lafayette coach Pat Thompson.

William Monroe won the regional team title Monday with 309 and Loudoun Valley was second with 310. Loudoun Valley’s Brandon Weaver was the medalist with a 72.

Bruton’s Wyatt Baldasare shot 91 at Monday’s 2A East Region golf tournament at par-70 Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg. Baldasare, who was the only Bruton golfer to qualify for regionals at the Conference 33 tournament on Sept. 24, will not advance to the state event.
