Lafayette's Carter Kale accepts athlete of year award in Charlottesville

Lafayette's Carter Kale accepted his Virginia High School League Group 3A Male Athlete of the Year on Monday in Charlottesville.

Kale, the reigning 3A state champion in the 500 freestyle, was selected from a pool of more than 200 nominations by a committee of athletic directors, media and VHSL staff.

He was recognized at a luncheon at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel on Monday.

Kale successfully defended his state title in the 500 free with a mark of 4:36.01, the fastest time in 3A or 4A. He also finished second in 3A in the 100 butterfly (51.24) and participated on the Rams' state champion 200-medley and 400-free relay teams.
