Prep Roundup: Bruton defeats Jamestown boys basketball

In boys basketball, senior forward DeAndre Richards had 28 points and 19 rebounds as Bruton outlasted Jamestown 92-84 Wednesday in Bay Rivers District competition. Senior forward Juwan Brown had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the host Eagles.

Lafayette 81, York 42 — Lafayette continued its early season excellence by beating York Wednesday behind Keyshawn Jefferson’s 23 points. The Rams, who also got 14 points apiece from Sutton Perozek and Tyler Neville, led by 28-12 after a quarter and 50-20 at the half. Yomarius Eley led the Falcons with 11 points.

Smithfield 54, Warhill 49 — The Packers held off the Lions on Wednesday despite Dcarius Brooks’ 19 points and Antonio Stovall’s 15 for Warhill. The Packers had a balanced offense, led by Jameek Jordan with 10 points, Marcus Custis with nine and Josh Farmer with eight.

Walsingham 61, Veritas 52 — Walsingham Academy defeated Veritas behind a second-halfcomeback on Tuesday. Freshman Marcus Banks had 26 points and junior Sam Jones had 19 points.

Girls basketball

Walsingham 43, Veritas 36 — Julia Wilson led the Trojans with her second consecutive double-double, posting 15 points and 14 rebounds. Olivia LeJeune contributed eight points as well as four steals and three rebounds. Catherine Williams added 8 points and 13 rebounds.

Tabb 47, Warhill 38 — Brianna Harper scored 17 points and Danielle Bennett sank five three-pointers to spark Tabb to a nine-point win Thursday night at Warhill. Tyra Fannin scored 14 and Te'Daizhua Jones 11 for the Lions.

Grafton 44, Bruton 35 — Nyah Chisolm poured in 15 points to guide Grafton (3-5, 3-3 Bay Rivers) to a home victory over Bruton Thursday. For the Panthers, Julecia Ferguson scored 13 and Jade Robinson 11.

Grafton, down 13-12 at halftime, outscored Bruton 13-5 in the third quarter to take command.

Jamestown 65, York 36 — Corynthian Williams’ 18 points and Kenizjha Jackson's 15 guided Jamestown to a win at York. Destini Bryant led the Falcons with eight points.

Lafayette 50, New Kent 46, OT — Freshman McKenna Eddings, who had 22 points, began the overtime period with a three-point play, and Lafayette emerged with a four-point victory at New Kent Thursday.

New Kent led 9-2 after one quarter, but Eddings scored seven points in a 10-point Rams run. The Trojans bounced back to go ahead 24-21 by halftime, and it was 29-29 after three quarters.

New Kent led 41-39 until Lafayette's Taylor Thomas grabbed an offensive rebound, was fouled with eight seconds left and hit two free throws to force overtime.

With the Rams leading by three, Olivia Stewart sank a clinching free throw. Haley Hyndshaw scored 16 points and Jada Hooker had 10 — five in the first quarter — for the Trojans (2-5). …

Also on Thursday, Smithfield defeated Poquoson 42-39.

Wrestling

Lafayette lost to Smithfield, 45-30, but beat Tabb 78-6 on Wednesday.

In the contested matches against Tabb, Lafayette wrestlers won seven of eight – all seven wins coming by pin. The Rams won six matches against Tabb by forfeit. …

Warhill lost to York Wednesday 37-36.
