Walsingham Academy’s boys and girls cross country teams took first place at Thursday’s Walsingham Invitational held at Eastern State.
The girls took seven of the top 10 places, including first, second and third, scoring 17 points and defeating second place Nansemond Suffolk Academy with 56 points and third place Norfolk Collegiate with 81 points.
Walsingham’s Frankie Riggs was the race winner, finishing in 21:16. Delaney Riggs came in second, and Catherine Schumacher took third. They were followed closely by Clare Kinney in fifth, Grace Vidlak in sixth, Emma Lobash in ninth and Julia Grimson in 10th.
Walsingham’s boys were led by Jake Lobash who came in fourth overall with a time of 18:24. He was followed by Patrick Murphy in seventh, Eddie Murphy in ninth, Mathew Brause in 11th and Jack Shonka in 13th. They scored 43 points to beat Norfolk Collegiate in second with 51 and third place Nansemond Suffolk Academy with 63 points. ...
At the second Bay Rivers District meet, Jamestown’s John Agnew took first in 17:08. Teammates Johnny Babyak, Taylor Beall, Noah Fields and Will Plante rounded out the top five in the boys section.
Jamestown’s Jean Thorin won the girls’ Bay Rivers District race, finishing in 19:30. Teammates Kirsten Long, Jacqueline Vishton, Jean Sorenna and Charisa Morris rounded out the top five in the girls section.
On Thursday, Grafton swept Smithfield 25-12, 25-8, 25-9. Lisa O’Grady had 10 kills, and Allison Kenny had eight for Grafton, while Kenny, Lily Sheeren and Kennedy Hoge each had four aces and Haley Sutton had 23 assists.
Also, New Kent swept York 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 and Tabb needed five sets to defeat Bruton 18-25, 28-26, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13.
On Thursday, Tabb (8-0, 8-0 Bay Rivers) defeated Smithfield 5-2 and New Kent shut out Jamestown 1-0. The Trojans improved to 2-1 overall and in the BRD and the Eagles fell to 2-4, 0-4. …
On Wednesday, Lafayette improved to 3-3 overall and in district play with a 1-0 win over Bruton (0-6-1, 0-4). … Grafton edged York 1-0 as the Clippers moved to 2-6, 2-3 in the BRD. The Falcons are 3-3, 2-2. … Poquoson is 3-0 overall and in the district after posting a 2-0 win over Warhill, handing the Lions their first loss. Warhill fell to 4-1 overall and in district play.
