Jamestown High's girls swim team successfully defended its Bay Rivers District crown last Saturday with a dual meet victory over Lafayette (48-46) and Smithfield (83-11) at Hampton University.
Joelle Vereb, Taylor Vitaletti, Sarah Niewola and Margaret Williams captured the 400-freestyle relay in 3:44.90 seconds as the Eagles finished the regular season with a 9-0 record in dual meets.
Vereb won two individual events and swam on two winning relays. The freshman won the 200 individual medley (2:11.99) and the 100 butterfly (58.57). She also teamed with Vitaletti, Kylie Roehrle and Williams to win the 200-freestyle relay.
Williams won the 100 freestyle (54.54) in Jamestown's win over Lafayette.
Jenna Beattie posted wins in the 200 freestyle (2:00.70) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.30) to lead the Rams. She also teamed with Jessica Beattie, Sarah Jurczyk and Indigo Cristol to win the 200-medley relay (1:57.00).
Jessica Beattie won the 100 backstroke (1:01.53) for Lafayette. Other individual winners for Lafayette included McKinzie Turner (1:14.14) in the 100 breaststroke and Jessica Beattie in the 100 backstroke (1:01.53).
Against Smithfield, Roehrle posted individual victories in the 200 freestyle (2:03.62) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.30). She also teamed with Niewola, Devan Freeland and Hannah Clymer to win the 200-medley relay (2:00.77).
Vitaletti won the 50 freestyle (26.40) and Williams won the 100 backstroke (1:02.84). Freeland won the 100 breaststroke (1:16.31).
Boys — Jamestown High's swim team improved to 7-2 on the season in dual meets last Saturday with victories over Lafayette (50-44) and Smithfield (73-20).
The victory over the Rams was especially impressive, considering the Eagles didn't win any individual events. Jamestown's depth keyed the win, posting several second- and third-pace finishes in the individual events. The Eagles were also aided by the strength of their relay teams.
Colin Wright, Ryan Boll, Matt Cudzik and Ben van Tasel won the 200-freestyle relay (1:34.32). Wright, Tyler Price, Cudzik and van Tasel clinched the dual-meet victory with a first-place finish in the 400-freestyle relay (3:45.03).
Carter Kale won the 50 freestyle (22.75) and the 100 freestyle (49.99) to lead Lafayette. Conor Flannery was first in the 200 freestyle (1:49.82) and the 100 butterfly (55.59). Brett Huckstep won the 200 individual medley (2:06.28) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.07). Deke Lueker won the 500 freestyle (5:07.28) and the 100 backstroke (58.79) for the Rams.
Against Smithfield, Johnny Shideler won the 100 butterfly (57.27) and van Tasel was first in the 100 freestyle (51.83) to lead Jamestown. Ryan Babcock was first in the 100 backstroke and Taylor Watson won the 200 individual medley (2:11.70). Price was first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.54) and Wright won the 50 freestyle (23.25).
Jamestown will compete in the Conference 19 championships Thursday night at Fort Eustis Aquatic Center. The regional meet will take place on Feb. 10.
