JAMES CITY — Last year, Smithfield High rallied for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to spoil Lafayette's undefeated Bay Rivers District season.
Coach Andy Linn's team made sure that wouldn't happen this time around, scoring 22 first-quarter points and cruising to a 62-0 win over the Packers on homecoming.
Senior Jahlil Green rushed for 210 yards on 21 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Rams. Green's performance gave him more than 1,000 yards for the fourth straight year and gave him 4,851 for his career.
Lafayette (7-0, 6-0 Bay Rivers District) scored on its first two possessions and added another on special teams in the first quarter to put the game away early.
Darren Patton rumbled 57 yards to paydirt on Lafayette's first possession to give the Rams a 7-0 lead with 9:27 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Packers' returner bobbled the kick and picked up the ball inside his 10-yard line. Tyler Kaplan forced Lovell Parker into his end zone and brought him down for a safety and a 9-0 lead with 9:15 left in the quarter.
Lafayette struck again on special teams later in the quarter, as Tyler Jump blocked Colin Gary's punt to give the Rams a first-and-10 from the Smithfield 18. Four plays later, Schekel Wallace bulldozed his way in from 2 yards to take a 15-0 lead with 3:25 left in the first half.
Green notched his second touchdown of the game just before halftime, breaking off an 80-yard run to put Lafayette up 29-0 at halftime.
The Rams' offense continued to click in the second half. Brandon Villanueva-Pernell capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive on Lafayette's first possession with a 19-yard touchdown reception from Brendan McGinty to put the Rams up 36-0 with 9:16 left in the quarter.
Wallace added a 1-yarder and Patton returned a fumble 18 yards for his second score of the game to start the fourth quarter.
Backup QB Cheyton Pine scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to wrap up scoring for the Rams.
Lafayette dominated in all three facets of the game. Defensively, the Rams held Smithfield (4-3, 3-3) to just 21 yards of offense, including just 14 on the ground. Matt Hummel, Deacon Smith and Wallace anchored a unit that forced five turnovers.
