JAMES CITY — Friday night was supposed to mark Senior Night at Wanner Stadium, as Lafayette High's athletic department was scheduled to honor its most experienced athletes.
The pregame festivities were delayed until the postseason because of inclement weather.
But Lafayette's seniors made sure they were honored in their final game, leading the Rams to an impressive 65-14 win over Warhill.
Jahlil Green rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns and added another 51-yard touchdown reception to extend his lead in the race for the Bay Rivers District rushing lead.
Schekel Wallace scored two touchdowns on the ground, and QB Brendan McGinty added another short rushing score as Lafayette scored more than 60 points in a game for the third straight week.
Lafayette (9-0 overall, 8-0 district) scored early and often, finding the end zone less than two minutes into the game. McGinty faked the handoff to Wallace and then hit a wide-open Green on a seam pattern for a 51-yard touchdown reception. Blake Rouse's extra point was good and the Rams led 7-0.
Green struck again on Lafayette's next possession in his more conventional manner. The Bay Rivers' leading rusher capped a four-play, 49-yard drive with a 3-yard run. McGinty then hit Wallace for the 2-point conversion as the Rams led 15-0.
Warhill answered on the next play from scrimmage as Auston Parrott took an inside handoff and rumbled 70 yards untouched for a touchdown. Allen Standford converted the extra point and the Lions trailed 15-7 with 4:22 left in the quarter.
That was close as the Lions would get. Green scored his third touchdown of the quarter as Lafayette led 22-7 with six seconds left in the first quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Lafayette, which outscored the Lions 29-0 as the rout was on. McGinty capitalized on a fumbled kickoff return for a 2-yard run with 10:10 left in the half. On the next possession, Wallace scored on a 5-yard run.
The Rams' defense got in the action as Darren Patton tackled Parrott in the end zone for a safety and a 38-7 lead. Green scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 4:29 left, this one from 21 yards. Patton added a 9-yard touchdown run just before time expired as Lafayette led 51-7 at halftime.
The third quarter was more of the same, as Wallace scored his second touchdown of the game, a 6-yard run with 7:28 left.
Lafayette's reserves got in the act in the fourth, as backup quarterback Cheyton Pine hit Derrick Harris on a 25-yard touchdown pass for a 65-7 lead.
Warhill's Reggie Lipscomb capped the scoring midway through the fourth, rumbling 54 yards for a score.
