Last month, Cole Sanderson chose to make swimming his full-time sport after splitting time with Walsingham Academy's boys basketball team the past two years.
The senior's decision was rewarded last Saturday after leading the Trojans to a second-place finish at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II meet held at George Mason University's Freedom Aquatic Center.
Sanderson won an individual event and was a part of two record-setting relay squads as Walsingham (201.5 points) finished behind Fredericksburg Christian Academy's (212) for the team title.
Michael Holder, Dylan Sullivan, Duncan Hamra and Sanderson established a new meet record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 30.40 seconds. Holder, Sanderson, Jacob Marquardt and Hamra also won the 200 medley relay (1:46.21).
Individually, Sanderson earned top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.85). He also was second in the 200 individual medley (2:12.66).
Hamra was second in the 100 freestyle (52.25) and Sullivan finished third in the 50 freestyle (23.69). Holder was third in the 200 (1:54.68) and 500 freestyle (5:12.39). Other top-10 performers for Walsingham included: Hamra in the 50 freestyle (23.70), Sullivan (1:02.99) and Marquardt (1:03.08) in the 100 butterfly (1:02.99), Isabel Overy in the 100 backstroke (1:19.72) and Marquardt, Michael Maglieri, Ian Gallagher and Sullivan in the 200 free relay (1:41.77).
