Four of five Williamsburg Hornets youth football teams won as the season opened Aug. 23. Hornets gold squads took three out of three against the Gloucester White Knights, while the green teams won two out of three against the Yorktown Patriots.
Gold Mites 20, Gloucester White 13
The Gold Mites had the ball for much of the first quarter, but were plagued by penalties stalling their offensive drives in the first half. Joshua Simpson, Carson Moeller, Isaiah Elliott, Landon Wagner and Jonathan Rocha made big defensive plays to hold the White Knights to six first-half points.
In the second half, a Gold Mites offense led by Xzavian Mason went to work. The Hornets marched down the field with Kelsey Deriso punching the ball into the end zone.
Later Isaac Drummond broke a nice run, keeping a scoring drive alive and setting up Mason's touchdown run. The Knights were able to break loose for a touchdown, bringing the score even at 13-13.
The Hornets mounted a drive that culminated in Mason's long touchdown run to make it 20-13.
Gold Mighty Mites 32, Gloucester White 0
Team Captains Ryan Kailian, Jacob Billups, Camden Hubbard and Sam Tabb led the Hornets. There are 31 players on the team, and coaches praised their work as a team to get ready for the season.
Gold Midgets 32, Gloucester White 0
Lamont Jones and Jamaree Seldon made key runs on the Gold Hornets' first offensive drive, with Nathaniel Fly scoring on a 20-yard run to make it 7-0.
Lamont Jones broke free up the middle for a 33-yard touchdown run for the second Hornets touchdown. Seldon's 42-yard run down the right sideline was his team's last score before going into halftime up 20-0.
Second half highlights included Brandon Jefferson returned the second half kickoff 30 yards, and quarterback Hayden Keesee's 30-yard bootleg for a touchdown and early third quarter 26-0 lead
R.J. Simpson had an interception and 15-yard return for the Hornets. That play eventually led to Mason Eggleston's 20-yard quarterback keeper run for a touchdown and 32-0 Hornets lead.
Yorktown Patriots 12 Green Mites 2
Jamarey Hardin and Antoine Grant had good runs on offense. They also got together for a tackle in the backfield that earned the two-point safety for Williamsburg. Haden Smith, R.J. Roby, Seth Brown, Isaiah Rembert Grant and Hardin had key tackles on defense.
Green Midgets 20, Yorktown Patriots 0
Bryce Cupp broke off for a 46-yard touchdown run on the fourth play of the game behind a block by Alex Nieto. Early in the second quarter, Loyal Gresham added another score after a 54-yard touchdown scamper. Gresham totaled 101 yards rushing on the day.
Josh Hamman hauled in a 17-yd strike from Cupp early in the fourth for his first career touchdown grab.
