UPDATE: American Legion Senior Williamsburg Post 39 beat Poquoson Post 273 14-1 in the District 3 tournament final Wednesday night at Warhill High School.

Post 273 defeated Gloucester Post 75 17-5 earlier Wednesday to reach the championship.

Post 39 (19-0) notched its fourth consecutive district title and qualified for the state tournament for the third time in four seasons. The team will play at state next week at Fireman's Field in Purcellville, starting with a game Tuesday at 9 a.m. against the District 16 champion Post 290 Stafford Nationals.

"We’ve got some rest time, and everybody should be ready to go," said Post 39 coach Tom Richardson. "The competition up there’s going to be stiff as always. Our 19-0 record means nothing up there. Everybody’s undefeated and nobody has any losses, and we just start over."

In Tuesday's consolation game, Gloucester Post 75 defeated Middlesex Post 241 13-12.

Wednesday at Warhill High School, Post 273 and Post 75 will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the winner taking on Post 39 in the championship game at 8 p.m.

Post 39 13, Post 241 1

American Legion Senior Williamsburg Post 39 defeated Middlesex Post 241 13-1 in Monday's quarterfinal of the District 3 tournament at Warhill High School. Post 39 was scheduled to play Poquoson Post 273, a 10-0 winner at Gloucester Post 75 Monday, Tuesday night.

Post 241 and Post 75 were to meet in the consolation bracket Tuesday night in Gloucester.

Two games are scheduled for Wednesday evening both at the highest remaining seed's field, starting at 5:30 p.m., with an if necessary game possible on Thursday.

Top-seeded Post 39 was slated to play at home all week until it won the four-team double elimination District 3 tournament or was eliminated. The tournament champion qualifies for next week's state tournament at Fireman's Field in Purcellville.

Post 39 13, Post 241 1

Post 39 scored seven runs in the fifth inning Monday. Pitcher Matt Smith had eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Michael Brumfield, Mike Anerton and Solomon McCray had two hits each for Post 39. McCray had four RBI, Griffin Colorado three and Kent Klyman two for the winners.

Post 273 10, Post 75 0

Pitcher Zach Snow had 12 strikeouts in eight innings on the mound for Post 273 Monday. P.J. Jackson and Brandon Kelly had three hits each for Post 273, and Brandon Ferebee had two hits and three RBI.

Jackson had two RBI.

Post 39 6, Gloucester Post 75 3

Post 39 finished the regular season 16-0 after a victory and two forfeits last week.

Hampton Post 31 forfeited its July 18 game against Post 39 that had been rescheduled from July 16 because of rain, and moved from Hampton to Warhill High School. On July 15, Post 241 forfeited its game against Post 39.

In between, Post 39 won 6-3 over Gloucester Post 75 July 17 at Gloucester High School.

Post 39 scored five runs in the third inning. Liam Lowery led Post 39 with three hits and two RBI. Mike Anerton and Solomon McCray had two hits apiece.

Pitcher Matt Smith had five strikeouts for Williamsburg.

Post 273 gets 2 forfeit wins

Hampton Post 31 forfeited its two games scheduled July 17 night with Poquoson Post 273 at Poquoson High School. Post 273 finished the regular season 9-7.
