Local products performing well for Tribe at CAA swim championships

The William and Mary men's swimming team advanced 21 swimmers Friday morning to the finals of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships in Christiansburg including 16 in the championship heats.

The Tribe continued to lead the team race early Friday with 500.5 points, which was already the ninth-best total in school history with most of two days to go, while Drexel was second at 360 and Towson third with 295.5 points.

Freshman Colin Wright, a Jamestown graduate, swam a lifetime-best 49.04 in the 100 butterfly to earn the sixth seed Friday night, and to rank sixth all-time for the Tribe. On Thursay, Wright swam the 50 free in 19.96 seconds as the Tribe men claimed the top four spots.

Sophomore Carter Kale, a Lafayette graduate and Virginia Tech transfer, swam a lifetime-best and NCAA provisional mark of 4:24.73, taking over the lead at the final turn and pulling away to win his first conference title.

The William and Mary women's team had a strong morning Friday during prelims, advancing 17 swimmers to the finals, including 11 in the championship heat. James Madison continued to lead the team race with 434 points with the Tribe holding steady in second with 378.5 points, 100 ahead of Towson in third.

Bruton alumna Allie Christy, a senior, swam a lifetime-best 1:03.23 to earn the sixth seed overall in the breaststroke Friday morning. She led the way in the 200 IM Thursday in 2:03-flat to finish fourth overall, the seventh-fastest single race in school history.

Baseball

After being swept on the road at national power Florida, William and Mary opened its Plumeri Park schedule Friday with a nonconference series against Lafayette College.

Game two is 10 a.m. Saturday and the finale is 1 p.m. Sunday before Tuesday's tilt at Virginia.

Brandon Raquet, an outfielder from Pennsylvania, was named CAA Rookie of the Week after notching four hits against the Gators with a home run and pair of RBIs.

Women's basketball

William and Mary (16-10, 6-9 CAA entering Friday) hosted UNC Wilmington Friday and will visit James Madison on Sunday.

The Tribe, which lost 70-49 to Elon Sunday, will close out the regular season at home Wednesday against Drexel.
