Warhill clinches school's first state golf tourney appearance

Warhill advanced to the 3A state golf tournament Thursday after finishing second behind New Kent in the 3A East Region tournament at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club's par-71 course.

Warhill shot 326, 14 shots behind New Kent. It was the Lions' lowest team score of the season as they clinched the school's first golf team state tourney appearance.

Warhill's Evan Kerr and Bryce Parker broke 80 for the first time this year, shooting 76 and 77, respectively to the lead the Lions' charge.

Leesburg's Riverside High was third with a 337 and the low medalist from Brentsville High shot a 73 to top the individual scores.

Warhill coach Edgar Randall said the Shenandoah rough is especially thick and the greens played fast despite being wet.

He had told his team during the season if it could get to region play, anything could happen.

With the team outcome in hand., Parker sank a 25-foot birdie putt to close his round.

The state tournament is Oct. 12-13 in Abingdon.
