Jamestown's Salamy and Bell, Lafayette's Smethurst qualify for 4A golf tourney

JAMES CITY - Jamestown came agonizingly close to returning to the state Group 4A golf championships, missing out on the field by a stroke Monday at Stonehouse Golf Club behind Great Bridge in the East Region competition.

Hanover won the regional with a 305 ahead of second-place Great Bridge's 311. Jamestown followed in third with a 312.

The Eagles will still send two golfers to states next week as individuals: freshman Kelly Salamy, the top individual qualifier with a 70, and senior William Bell, who shot 77.

Lafayette senior Jacob Smethurst also cracked the state field, shooting 77, and the Rams shot 345 as a team.

Salamy, Bell and Smethurst each earned all-region first-team honors, and Lafayette's Preston Ruescher (80) made the all-region second team.

Trevor Exton (82) and Bobby Dudeck (83) rounded out the top-four for Jamestown.

Low medalist and region Player of the Year honors went to Hanover's Ward Wilkinson, who shot 67 to anchor the Hawks.
