New Kent pulls away from Warhill, 42-28

JAMES CITY – New Kent let an early 14-0 advantage slip away Friday at Wanner Stadium and trailed 28-20 entering the fourth quarter before scoring 22 unanswered points to down Warhill 42-28 and keep its 3A postseason hopes alive.

New Kent running back Evan Branch had 193 rushing yards on 28 carries with five of the Trojans’ six touchdowns in a back-and-forth battle pitting run-oriented offenses. 

Branch had touchdown runs of 41, 22, 12,9, and 30 yards and the latter three came in the fourth quarter including the go-ahead score from 9 yards with 4:11 to play in the game.

C.J. Reeders (14 carries, 164 yards) had the other touchdown for the Trojans on a 65-yard third-quarter score right up the gut that put the visitors up 20-14.

New Kent (4-4, 3-4 Bay Rivers) outgained Warhill 393-192, throwing only one pass and forced three takeaways on Lions’ fumbles. 

Rodney Hudson led the Lions (3-5, 2-5) with 132 rushing yards including a 67-yard second-quarter touchdown.
