New Kent wrestling coach Mike Faus selected state high school Coach of the Year

Mike Faus, who guided New Kent to Bay Rivers District, Conference 25 and Group 3A East Region titles in 2015, has been named the Virginia High School Coach of the Year. He will receive the award on April 18 from the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Faus has coached at New Kent for 14 seasons. His teams have won eight Bay Rivers District titles, four regional championships and two Conference 25 crowns, and had 41 state place-winners.

In addition, his wrestlers have won three individual state titles -- two this season -- and finished third in the state team standings twice.

"I don't get surprised much, but I was surprised by that," Faus said. "Just to be acknowledged by them is something I appreciate.

"But, while it's nice to have my name representing the (New Kent) program, it's not just me. It takes a village to build a wrestling program."
