Colonial Kitchen & Market is hosting a fundraising event with live music, a corn hole tournament and served by celebrity waiters.
All proceeds from the celebrity waiter event on Aug. 26 will support the opening of the emergency domestic violence shelter Bridges of Change.
"The Bridges of Change emergency domestic violence shelter came about when we realized the need for a shelter for victims in our service area. Although shelters in other areas include us in the service area, it is very difficult to get a victim into said shelters," New Kent victim witness assistance program director Karen Mortensen said.
Bridges of Change is envisioned as a four- or five-bedroom facility that would provide a safe living space for domestic violence survivors. The shelter is intended to serve West Point, King William, New Kent, King & Queen and Charles City residents who don't have local access to a similar facility.
"Shawna Gray wrote some private grants to get to our goal of $175,000, which we estimate to be the start-up costs for such a shelter. We then formed a board of directors and from that came a fundraising committee," said Mortensen.
Some of the celebrity waiters, includes: local law enforcement, Del. Chris Peace, author J.L. Berg, New Kent Fire Chief Opett, West Point Police Chief Bobbie Mawyer, New Kent Director of Social Services Jon Martz and NBC12 anchors Curt Autry and Kelly Avellino.
