WEST POINT — Students from West Point Public Schools honored fallen veterans in an early Memorial Day ceremony Friday morning.

West Point alumnus and army veteran Mary Hudson also spoke during the ceremony about her experiences while deployed overseas in Afghanistan.

The ceremony began in front of the high school, where Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary members and three students laid memorial wreaths, according to high school yearbook adviser Mary Ellen Borinski.

The VFW performed a gun salute, student Tyler Zaprazny played taps and elementary school students placed flowers by the wreaths.

Students from grades 5-12 moved into the auditorium and listened to performances by the high school chorus, high school Harmonix, high school band, elementary school Melody Makers and elementary school teacher Lynette Waddey.

The Rev. Marvin Kirby made closing remarks at the ceremony.
