Author explores Spanish settlements in America, Chesapeake Bay

Before it was known as the Chesapeake Bay, the body of water was seen on Spanish maps as "La Bahia de Santa Maria." It likely would have stayed that way too if it wasn't for a series of unfortunate events for Spanish settlers in North America.

The efforts to explore the New World are chronicled in La Florida, a new book by local author Aleck Loker. Loker signed books Saturday at the William & Mary Bookstore and discussed his new work with the Gazette.

In Loker's opinion, too many classrooms focus on the English settlements when teaching  the founding of the United States. But with the U.S.'s growing Hispanic population, he said it's time to spend more time...
