Game and fisheries: Do not feed the deer

To keep deer populations at bay, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries wants to remind people that it is illegal to feed deer between Sept. 1 and the first Saturday in January, according to a news release.

Feeding deer can unnaturally increase deer populations and damage natural habitats, increase the likelihood for disease transmission, increase deer/vehicle collisions and diminish the wild nature of deer, the state agency reports.

Effective Sept. 1, it's illegal to feed deer statewide in Virginia. The annual prohibitions run through the first Saturday in January and are described by the agency in a news release:
