Williamsburg Boat Club Returns From Mid-Atlantic Regional Regatta By Kenneth Alcorn

The rowers start 2000 meters from the finish line, appearing only as little specks through the binocular lenses. Then, over the next thirty seconds you can start to see the faint movement of the oars as the racers begin their assault on the lake. It takes a little longer to see this movement if it is a single or double scull boat, but when the quads or 4+ and 8+ sweep boats are running the course the image is augmented by a flurry of oars moving back and forth with occasional splashes of water.
