NASA Langley helps Orion make 'picture perfect' launch, splash-down

America's new Orion crew capsule launched without a hitch Friday morning from Cape Canaveral, Fla., for a successful test flight that NASA says ushers in a new era of manned space exploration.

About a dozen die-hards watched the liftoff live on an IMAX screen at the Virginia Air & Space Center in downtown Hampton, which opened its doors before dawn to give the public a free, big-screen view. They cheered as the Delta IV rocket burst from the launch pad at 7:05 a.m.

"This is incredible," said Tracy Glock, a New Jersey schoolteacher and science blogger who drove to Hampton Roads with her family earlier in the week to attend pre-launch events at NASA Langley...
