Newest Smithsonian captures history using Hampton Roads artifacts

When the first Africans arrived off Old Point Comfort in 1619, it set off a chain of events on the Peninsula and in the United States that the country is still catching up with.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, the most recent addition to the Smithsonian Institute, is attempting to encapsulate that nearly 400 years of history after opening Saturday.

Situated not far from the Washington Monument, the NMAAHC shocks and elevates, all while using artifacts and tapping into the history of Hampton Roads through five floors of galleries and 400,000 square feet.
