According to Professor Henry Hart of the English Department at the College of William and Mary, himself a noted biographer and award-winning poet, Melissa Commander is one of the most talented student writers at W&M.
Melissa was awarded this year's Concord Traveling Fellowship, enabling her to travel to Cuba to meet and visit with family members.
"My grandmother was born in 1944, just outside of Guantanamo, Cuba," said Melissa in a recent interview with the Gazette. "Her family owned a large dairy farm. She and her eight brothers and sisters enjoyed great wealth and comfort."
