Ret. Col. Larry Wilkerson, a former chief of staff to Sec. of State Colin Powell, and a visiting professor at William and Mary, argued the U.S. was ill-prepared to adapt to the foreign policy and military readiness challenges of the 21st century, during a lecture at the Williamsburg Library Monday night.
The lecture was hosted by the James City County Democratic Committee.
Wilkerson said Congress had ceded much of its oversight on national security issues to the executive branch. Wilkerson said a combination of economic and political pressures were leading to more use of military force, sometimes in opposition to American interests.
