RICHMOND — A bipartisan group of Virginia senators wants the state Supreme Court to clarify a legislative privilege, allowing them to communicate with outside consultants in secret.
If a circuit court judge won't kick that issue up to the state's highest court for review, the legislators want to be held in contempt.
On this second request, the group pushing for openness agrees. Attorneys for redistricting reform group OneVirginia2021 argued in a filing Friday that state senators should be fined $200 a day if they don't give up the goods.
They specifically asked the judge to make sure taxpayer money doesn't go toward the fines.
