Two outside mail collection boxes were pried open and emptied at the Monticello Avenue office, U.S. Postal Service investigators said Thursday.
The blue drive-up boxes for letters and small packages were forced open sometime between 5 p.m. Friday and around 7 a.m. Monday morning, said Michael J. Romano, national spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Authorities at the James City County post office contacted federal officials Monday morning about the damage. Investigators came out to take fingerprints and collect evidence, Romano said.
"We believe some mail is missing from the boxes," Romano said.
