VHSL membership approves 6-classification system

Virginia High School principals did not hold hands and sing Kumbaya in approving a new six-classification postseason playoff system to replace the current three-class setup. But forecasts of contentiousness at the fall membership meeting held Tuesday in Charlottesville proved unfounded, and the realignment was passed by a 189-110 majority with no rancor.

Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, schools will be divided into six statewide classifications for postseason play strictly by enrollment from Group 1A, the smallest schools, to Group 6A, the largest. VHSL schools have been divided since the 1970-71 school year into three classes: A, AA and AAA.
