A potentially serious problem went undetected until the girl received a vision screening through the nonprofit’s Head Start program last fall, Parlett said.

“If it had not been picked up it could have cost a lot of her vision,” she said.

Parlett’s experience illustrates how Parent Child Development Corporation isn’t just concerned with child education, but also with the medical and emotional well-being of Tidewater families, executive director Verlane Mack said.
