Jamestown coach shows the way at Swamp run 5K

Jamestown High School’s head men’s track and cross country coach Mark Tompkins set a fine example for his runners last Saturday at the 17th annual Jamestown High School Swamp Run 5K, a race that started on the school’s soccer field, entered the crushed-gravel Greensprings Trail for the majority of the race, returned to the school athletic complex and ended on the track.

Not only did Tompkins, 42, of Williamsburg, place third overall, trailing only a couple of fast twenty-something runners, he had the highest age-graded percentage for the entire 134-runner field, and he came close to the men’s 40-44 race record.
