Jamestown named top athletic program in 4A

Jamestown was recognized as the top athletic program in the state in its classification for the first time since 2001 on Friday when the school received the 2016-17 Virginia High School League Wells Fargo Cup award for Group 4A.

The other winners were Radford (1A), Maggie Walker (2A), Blacksburg (3A), Deep Run (5A), and Oakton (6A).

Boosted by its girls swimming state team title and state championship appearances by the boys basketball and volleyball teams, Jamestown led the Wells Fargo standings entering the spring. Then, the Eagles finished as state runner-up in boys track and girls soccer in addition to sending both the boys and girls tennis teams to the state tournament....
