Horse races run in Virginia for first time in almost two years

Horse racing is back in Virginia, even as Colonial Downs remains dormant for the season.

Over the last two weekends, the Virginia Equine Alliance hosted three days of racing: the Virginia Downs at the Great Meadow Foundation in The Plains, Va., as well as the Commonwealth Derby and the Commonwealth Oaks at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., said Darrell Wood, who works in marketing and communications for the alliance.

The lack of racing at Colonial Downs this season will have a financial impact on New Kent County, which will receive about $250,000 from the alliance as part of legislation passed at the 2015 Virginia General Assembly. The money will help, but it won't make up...
