(RICHMOND) - York River State Park will kick off the spring paddling season with the annual "Burning of the Socks" Saturday, April 11.

York River, in James City County, will host this special event where visitors are encouraged to take off their socks, drop them in the bonfire and put on water shoes or sandals. The sock-burning will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by an afternoon guided canoe and kayak trip on Taskinas Creek to the York River.

"'Burning of the Socks has become a tradition at York River State Park to welcome the warm spring weather and kick off the water-based recreation season," said Education Specialist John Gresham.
