Crab Carnival will return with parades, music and of course, crabs, for its 35th year Oct. 6-7.
Crab Carnival attracts thousands of attendees annually and turns downtown West Point into a crustacean-themed festival.
New this year is the golf cart brigade in the carnival's Saturday parade, said Kristie Walker of the West Point Tri-Rivers Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event.
“Anyone who has a golf cart is encouraged to enter. It can be decorated in any fashion as long as it is done tastefully,” Walker said.
To celebrate the milestone 35th year, the Chamber of Commerce will offer a limited number of signed lithographs depicting the event’s T-shirt design, Walker said.
This year’s T-shirt design was created by Brandy Hollowell and Rico Senegal of Liquid Metal Tattoo, who won the contest held in June. The duo won the contest last year as well.
First responders take to Main Street for their own parade 7 p.m. Oct. 6, while a more varied parade featuring antique vehicles and marching bands begins its journey on Main Street between 1st and 10th streets at 1 p.m. Oct. 7.
Also on the schedule is the Tour de Crab, where children race bicycles down Main Street in one of four competitions at 5 p.m. Oct. 6.
Music will fill the air courtesy acts such as Sweet Justice, the Mullins Sisters and Powder Keg throughout the event. Fireworks will light up the sky starting at 9 p.m. Oct. 6 above the Pamunkey River. There’s no set firework viewing area.
The West Point YMCA will hold its annual cornhole fundraiser tournament around 6th and Main streets, Walker said.
Alongside activities and parades will be about 90 vendors that will sell a wide variety of items including homemade soaps and jewelry to cupcakes and West Point spirit wear, Walker said.
A special Crab Carnival section in the Oct. 4 issues of the Tidewater Review will provide details on parking, street closings, event schedules and other information.
